To start adding categories, simply login to WordPress dashboard. Once you are logged in, click on the button called "Posts" and you should see title for "Categories". Click it to open manage page. Here you'll see form which can be used to add new category. There you will be asked to provide required information in order to create new category:

Name - put a name for category,

Slug - URL-friendly version of category name. For example, if category name is My Category, slug will be my-category. You may leave it empty and WordPress will add it automatically.

Parent - there you can select children category for your main category if there is any.

Once this form will be filled with your information, click "Add New Category" button and new category will be created. It will be placed in the categories list.
