Fix Remote Administration when Windows Firewall Gets in the Way
Posted by on 26 October 2011 09:45 AM

Windows Firewall can affect remote administration with some MMC snap-ins. If Windows Firewall is enabled on a remote computer and you receive an error message stating that you don’t have appropriate rights, the network path isn’t found, or access is denied, you might need to configure an exception on the remote computer for incoming TCP port 445. To resolve this problem, you can enable the Windows Firewall: Allow Remote Administration Exception policy setting within Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Network\Network Connections\Windows Firewall\Domain Profile.

Alternatively, type the following at a command prompt on the remote computer:
netsh firewall set portopening tcp 445 smb enable
