SSL certificate is the Secure Socket Layer protocol which enables secure data transportation. When using SSL all your entered data is being encrypted in order to ensure privacy. It's important for websites related to payments to have SSL certificate installed. To ensure that SSL exists, website URL should begin with https when typically website URL with no SSL begins with http. Without SSL your data goes in plain text and could be stolen easy.
